Safety Specialist

The Safety Specialist will support the Associate Director of Environmental Health and Safety in maintaining Bowdoin College's comprehensive Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Program. The Safety Specialist will work under the direction of the Associate Director of EHS and be responsible for conducting inspections and audits relating to life and fire safety and emergency equipment, building safety codes, universal waste, and general and contractor safety. Other key tasks include coordinating and conducting safety training, handling hazardous materials and wastes and universal wastes, directing hazardous material clean-up efforts, reviewing and revising safety plans, programs, and policies, assisting with job hazard analyses and exposure assessments, administering the HAZCOM program, maintaining field equipment, acting as a "competent person," managing information databases, and recordkeeping.

Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Safety Engineering, Fire Science, Industrial Hygiene, or Environmental Science strongly preferred.

HS diploma or GED equivalent required.

Certification program or training in one or more of the following required:
Life Safety, Fire Safety, Occupational Health and Safety Administration General or Construction Industry 30 Hour, Industrial Hygiene, or related fields.

Working knowledge of OSHA, NFPA, MEDEP, USEPA, ANSI standards/codes/regulations.

Experience with safety standards as they relate to fall protection systems, lifts and ladders, confined space, lockout/tagout, arc flash, scaffolding, and PPE, among others.

Ability to communicate effectively and speak in front of diverse groups. Detail oriented and highly organized. Possesses strong work ethic and the ability to work independently and make sound decisions with regards to environmental health and safety. Self motivated, and values safety culture. Able to address safety concerns with employees as they arise.

Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite) and the willingness and ability to learn new software/computer programs.

Valid driver's license required with the ability to meet the requirements of the Bowdoin College Motor Vehicle Use Policy.

A minimum of one year of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
