UIW Mission


Position Summary
The Police Sergeant is responsible for supervision of a patrol shift of the University of the Incarnate Word Police Department. Specific responsibilities include supervising a shift, the functions, responsibilities, and personnel engaged in law enforcement duties associated with the protection, safety and welfare of students, faculty, employees and University property. The Police Sergeant reports to the Police Lieutenant.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of:
  • Strong supervisory techniques used to motivate and encourage today’s law enforcement.
  • Applicable federal, state, and local laws and ordinances.
  • General law enforcement techniques and procedures.
  • Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act of 1990 (a.k.a.: Clery Act)



Ability to:

  • Stay abreast of changing policies and laws.
  • Visually recognize through vision and hearing dangerous/hazardous situations.
  • Maintain mental capacity that allows the capability of exercising sound judgment and rational thinking under dangerous and stressful circumstances.
  • Demonstrate intellectual capabilities during training and testing processes; to include evaluating various scenarios and developing appropriate options and/or alternatives.

General:

  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.
  • Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA.


Required Education
High School Diploma or equivalency and completion from a TCOLE accredited police academy.

Required Work Experience
  • Five (5) years of experience in a civilian law enforcement or related field. Note that a combination of relevant military experience in law enforcement or security forces may substitute for experience.
  • Two (2) years of supervisory or manager experience in law enforcement.


Preferred Qualifications
  • At least eight (8) years of experience as a full time commissioned police officer.
  • Three (3) or more years of supervisory or manager experience in law enforcement.


Required Certifications, Licenses or Registrations
  • Intermediate Peace Officer Certificate issued by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Education.
  • Must have a valid driver license, driving record that is insurable by UIW insurance carrier, and be at least 21 years of age, as required to drive for UIW.


Work Hours
Work hours vary to include nights weekends, holidays, events and special assignments.

Physical Demands
Must be able to fulfill the duties of a Peace Officer which include but are not limited to:
  • Effect an arrest, subduing resisting individuals, chase fleeing subjects, running, walking, crouching, or crawling;
  • Move equipment, injured/impaired persons, and climb stairs/ladders;
  • Perform life-saving and rescue procedures;
  • Maintain effective audio-visual and perception techniques needed for making observations and for communicating with others.
  • Safely operate and maintain police vehicles and equipment.
