MBA Internships - An Opportunity for Growth

The Genentech MBA Internship Program is an an intensive 10-12 week opportunity that provides work within a fast-paced and challenging environment. MBA interns contribute to meaningful projects, interacting and working side by side with biotech industry experts.

Our internship program also provides a robust speaker series, which allows interns to hear from top executives throughout the summer. Genentech relies heavily on our internship talent pool to fill full-time positions.

We are hiring interns in the following areas:  Commercial, Finance, Business Development, Global Product Strategy, Pipeline & Portfolio Planning and Global Pharma Procurement.  

Commercial Overview
Our U.S. Commercial business plays a crucial role in bringing Genentech's therapies to our customers by transforming scientific innovations into changes in the practice of medicine that enhance and extend patients' lives. The organization's primary focus is to market and sell novel, targeted therapies for a variety of disease areas.

Commercial involvement in the product lifecycle begins early in the research and development phase. We bring our expertise to the process through market and competitive analysis and strategies, thought leader work, publication plans, pricing, promotional tactics, brand marketing, Salesforce training, and managed care marketing.

Commercial's expertise is focused on:

    Marketing and selling novel therapies for various disease areas

    Optimizing operations through innovation, efficiency, data-driven decision making, and business compliance

    Delivering and shaping managed markets solutions to advance patient access

Typical Internship Opportunities include:

    Within our Brand Marketing teams: Projects focusing on promotions, strategy and/or medical education

    Within Commercial Business Operations:  Projects focusing on Market Analysis and Strategy (Market Planning, Forecasting, Industry Analytics, Marketing Science and/or Competitive Intelligence) or Field Operations and Information Management

    Within Managed Managed Care and Customer Operations: Projects focused on Managed Care Marketing, Managed Care Operations and/or Strategic Pricing and Contract Management

    R& D Finance, in support of project teams and seniormanagement to advance molecule programs through clinical development.

    Technical Operations Finance in support of the groupresponsible for robust and cost-effective manufacturing of commercial andclinical products.

    Commercial Finance in support of the brand teams thatmarket and sell Genentech’s products.

    Controlling & Accounting in support of financialaccounting, reporting, internal controls, financial systems as well as sharedservice functions.

Finance Overview

Genentech Finance relies heavily on our internship talentpool to fill full-

time Finance positions, including rotational opportunitieswithin the Global Finance organization.  Applicantsshould have a long-term interest and commitment to a career in CorporateFinance.


Finance MBA Internships may be within one of the followinggroups within the Finance Organization:

    R&D Finance, in support of project teams and senior management to advance RD molecule programs through clinical development.  

    Technical Operations Finance in support of the group responsible for robust and cost-effective manufacturing of commercial and clinical products.

    Commercial Finance in support of the brand teams that market and sell Genentech’s products.  

    Controlling & Accounting in support of financial accounting, reporting, internal controls, financial systems as well as shared service functions.  

BusinessDevelopment Overview

Business Development is a diverse group oflicensing professionals that apply scientific, financial and negotiatingexpertise to establish collaborations that facilitate development andcommercialization of pharmaceutical products to bring important new medicinesto patients. Genentech's Business Development Group continually strives toidentify and evaluate novel opportunities that result in the forging of strongstrategic alliances with our drug development partners.

A Business Developmentintern may work with multiple departments in the company, such as Research,Medical Affairs, Market Development, Finance, Marketing, Product Development,Regulatory, Process Development, to assess the technical merit, potentialmarket size, competitive outlook, and strategic fit of licensing opportunitiesrelative to Genentech's existing portfolio.

Pipeline and PortfolioPlanning Overview

ThePipeline and Portfolio Planning (PPP) group supports strategic decision-makingfor the development portfolio by providing portfolio insights and supportingplanning processes for the global organization of Roche and Genentech.  The PPP team is dedicated to supporting drugdevelopment teams, functional area partners, and senior management to ensurethe mix of development programs and allocation of resources meet the company’sbusiness needs.  PPP provides a uniqueopportunity to interact with cross-functional teams and see drug developmentthrough multiple perspectives.  PreviousMBA interns within PPP have contributed to Genentech’s disease area developmentstrategies, performed analyses of factors that may lead to acceleration ordelay of current pipeline molecules, estimated the market potential of Rocheproducts in emerging markets, and assessed the role of Business Development inmeeting Genentech’s goals.


Aspart of the MBA Internship Program, PPP interns will have exposure to seniorleaders throughout the organization and will also have the opportunity tonetwork with other functions across Genentech, such as Commercial, ProductDevelopment, Finance and Business Development.

Global Product Strategy Overview

Global Product Strategy provides strategic businessdirection from research through to development, commercialization and medicalexcellence, collaborating with functions and affiliates to shape the future ofmedicine.

MBA internship positions are offered in Strategic Insightsand Analysis (SI&A). SI&A sits within Global Product Strategy, andparticipates actively in global commercial planning efforts leading throughproduct launch by providing objective, in-depth analyses on current and futuremarkets, product performance, customers, and competitors. Additionally, weidentify critical business issues and opportunities for growth, collaboratewith Genentech/Roche teams, and work to embed an external market point-of viewinto the strategic direction of the company.

Global Pharma Procurement Overview

Global Pharma Procurement(GPP) manages the supplier base of the company’s pharmaceutical business, whichincludes Genentech and the pharma business of its parent company Roche,headquartered in Switzerland, and thus plays a crucial role in bringing our therapiesto patients. We connect suppliers to the aims of our ‘internal’ businesspartners, who seek to transform the practice of medicine with scientificinnovation that enhances and extends patients' lives.  GPP is organized by ‘categories’ of servicesand supplies and intersects with Research and Development, Manufacturing,Commercial and Corporate Functions (at Genentech).

Who You Are

Position Requirements
Responsibilities and requirements for each position will vary depending on function and current level of experience. Applicants must be current students enrolled in an accredited MBA program.

Preferred qualifications include but are not limited to:

    3 or more years of work experience prior to graduate school in consulting, finance, marketing, sales, or drug development
    Prior work experience in the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industries
    Strong quantitative and analytical skills
    Demonstrated ability and experience in effectively interacting with executives and senior leaders
    Demonstrated leadership skills and experience
    Excellent communication skills
